Along with the owner of the academy, Kellie Steeves, Justyna Nylec (left) and Christina Wildman (center) had an opportunity to assist in the "spa makeover" performed on the pregnant mother-to-be "TRINA". Trina has been battling breast cancer through out her pregnancy. We helped make a difficult time more relaxing and lifted her spirits with a spa facial, pedicure, paraffin manicure, foil hilites with color, cut and blow dry and makeup! UPDATE!!!!!! "Trina" has delivered a beautiful baby Girl "Kamryn" this past June. But sadly she has lost her battle with cancer and passed away 4 weeks later. Please keep her family in your prayers. | Sexy Hair’s Kardel at the Emmy's Outstanding Achievement in Hairstyling for a Drama Series for her work on the ABC soap opera One Life to Live. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kardel has been working behind the chair for Sexy Hair since 2001, but was red-carpet gorgeous for the event in a Jovani gown and styled by Paul Thompson IV for the ceremony. Legend has it that the “One Life to Live” style-monger took destiny into her own hands by pursuing a variety of looks for the cast. “Soap opera hair tends to be conservative,” Kardel says, “but sometimes we get to be super creative for fantasy or dream segments. Once we made wigs for a drag queen show, and we’ve done period hair from the ‘40s, ‘50s and ‘60s — that’s the kind of thing that gets us notice and nominated for Emmys. I love when I get to do something really out-of-the-box like that or make a big change on one of the actors.” “It’s exciting to turn on the TV and see your work on the screen,” she says, “and the show is fun. Depending on the day, I work with 10 to 20 actors, and we have to move fast, cutting, coloring and styling their hair, or taking a wig that’s not the right color and making it work. We don’t finish until everything’s done, and sometimes that’s midnight.” Kardel is used to long hours and jet lag because she also travels worldwide for Sexy Hair and puts in hours at Classique Salon & Spa in Staten Island, NY as well. “When I was in beauty school, I didn’t know what I could do as a hairdresser. I thought you were behind the chair and that’s it. Sexy Hair taught me that the sky’s the limit. I tell my students to chase after their dreams… that’s what I did — literally.” |

Elan McDowell was born and raised in London. After completing an intensive three-year apprenticeship, she went on to work and eventually manage a salon in Pinner, London. At 21 years of age, she was offered what she calls the “chance of a lifetime”, to work in Bologna, Italy. While in Bologna, she realized that she loved to teach, motivate and communicate with other hair professionals. After one year in Italy, she moved to New York, where she landed a prized position as a stylist in the renowned De Franco Spagnolo Salon and Day Spa in Long Island, New York. Today she is an artistic director and salon manager for the same salon. Nine years ago, she was invited to join the elite Design Team of Graham Webb and continues to teach nationwide. |
